When you first got into affiliate selling it seemed like an easy no brainer. Right?

Yeah, same for me.

I thought it was a huge market place with tons of hungry customers. I thought the Internet was my oyster.

Once I got going, I found out it was a little tougher than I originally thought.

So along the way, I learned some good pointers. Things that strengthened my focus and put me on a high profit path.

I’d say the following 3 things were the most helpful:

1. Select your target audience first before deciding on products.Zero in on a group of people with a particular interest or problem. The more specific the better. Find out what forums they use, what websites they visit–and what magazines or ezines they read. Get to know them-get to know their lingo. The more you sound just like them-the more likely they’ll buy from you..
2. Choose a topic you’re deeply interested in (or want to learn about),and create a website around that theme. Choose affiliate products associated with that topic and blend the product links into your landing page copy using text links.
3. Promote products in high demandAn Ernst & Young study found that the most popular products bought online are:* Computer related products (40%)
   * Books (20%)
   * Travel (16%)
   * Clothing (10%)
   * Recorded Music and Subscriptions (6%)
   * Gifts (4%)
   * Investment (4%)

These 3 tips are a good starting point for defining your affiliate business.

The next thing to consider though is how to get qualified traffic to your site. Let’s face it… you need at least 500 unique visitors a day.

That’s not to say 500 are going to purchase from you. But that’s how much you need to be profitable if only 1 or 2 per cent are going to buy from you.

• Let your website be more than just an ordering page
  You ideally want loyal readership-and repeat customers. A good way to achieve this is to become a source of valuable  information  for the niche you are selling in. Some ways to do this are: discussion forums, user reviews, and blogs..

• Create a newsletter that readers subscribe to. Not only is this important for staying on customers’ radar-it’s also a way to notify them of new offers. Why wait for them to come to you?

• Keep your website content updated. This is particularly true for blogs and articles.  Fresh, on-topic information increases the likelihood your site will be crawled by Googlebot and get better targeted traffic.

Those are good basic starters.  Do these-and you’ll be miles beyond most affiliates.

I’m a fan of the TV show Lost.

In season 5 there was an episode where 6 of the
survivors return to the island after having been
rescued three years previously.

There’s a scene where Sawyer, a survivor who remained
on the island and had since become a leader, had a

Beginning marketers often get stumped for ideas as to
how to promote affiliate products when they don’t
already have a big list and loyal fan base to promote
to.

So I thought I’d take you behind the scenes of my
first affiliate marketing business model: review sites.

This was an easy way for me to get started and learn
the basics and I think you’ll find it will work for
you too if you aren’t already using this model.

A review site is a one page website that has a review
of an affiliate product. To do this effectively you
should actually purchase the product and use it and
write an original review. Don’t just rewrite someone
else’s review. Make it as personal as possible and
include your own results using the program. Your
review will have much more credibility that way.

If you’d like, you can include more than one review on
the page. For example, I like to have a review of my
#1 favorite product in that category and then include
2-4 runner ups and include reviews for those as well.

I set a goal to create 10 of these review sites per
month. It took me about 40 hours per month to create
those sites. After you create one review site you have
a template you can use and it goes much faster.

Then I spent about 10 hours per month marketing the
older sites in the forums and other social media plus
creating ad campaigns.

My expenses were $10/month for hosting for all of the
sites and $8 or so for each individual domain. My
marketing expenses, including purchase of the products
I reviewed and ad campaigns, were $700-1000 per month.

My take home pay, after expenses, was $4000 each
month, which works out to $67 per hour. Not too many
jobs pay that much money and I achieved that level in
a very short time.

I’ve since expanded my business model, which you’ll
hear about later, but for those starting out, review
sites are a great way to go.

I wish I had a dollar for ever time someone has
asked me where to find affiliate products that sell well.

When I was first starting out, I used Clickbank,
PayDotCom and ShareASale. These are still my top three
affiliate network recommendations.

Affiliate networks give you the advantage of screening
out bad vendors and they act as a middleman and
process the payments for you (with the exception of
PayDotCom, which works with your PayPal account).

But I also encourage you to find companies that have
their own affiliate programs. You’ll have a lot less
competition when you sell products this way. The only
downside is that you have to do some digging to find
them.

Start with a Google search for the product you want to
promote, followed by the word “affiliate.”

For example: “tea kettles” +affiliate.

This will show you the websites that have affiliate
programs and also sell tea kettles.

You’ll have to visit the website and look around for
their affiliate page. It’s often not very obvious. If
you don’t find one but are very interested in the
company, email and ask them.

If a company looks promising make sure to examine
their affiliate agreement using the info I gave you in
my previous email about affiliate scams. You’ll want a
payment schedule and threshold that is fair and that
you can live with.

It’s also great if you can have hands-on help and
support as you are picking affiliates to partner with.

I’ll never forget how idealistic I was when I first started doing affiliate marketing.

I didn’t slow down to read the affiliates’ terms of services or any of the fine print. I just plunged in, assuming money would come pouring in 24/7.

After I made my first sale I logged in with great excitement, only to realize I wouldn’t get paid until I made at least five sales. Not only that, the payments had to come from all the major credit card companies (AmEx, Visa, Mastercard), and purchases made
with PayPal didn’t count toward the five sales.

Needless to say my enthusiasm was dampened a bit.

And it seemed like every sale for the next several
weeks was made with a PayPal payment.

Finally someone bought a product using Mastercard and
I received my affiliate first check and my sales have
only continued to grow.

But since then I’ve learned to read the affiliate
agreements very carefully so that I know what to
expect.

I’ve also learned that there are three common
affiliate scams out there and I want to give you a
heads up about them today:

1. Inadequate tracking. Sometimes affiliates won’t
track your cookies for very long. So if you have an
affiliate link on a review site or in an autoresponder
email, the sale won’t register beyond the first 30 or
60 days.

Make sure your affiliate networks and companies track
your cookies for at least a year but preferably for
life.

2. High payout thresholds. Some companies won’t pay
you until you’ve sold $100, $1000 or even more of
product. Look for companies with low payout thresholds
instead. For example, Clickbank has a payout threshold
of only $10 (the default is $100 so you will have to
manually adjust it to $10).

3. Infrequent payments. It’s not uncommon for
companies and networks to pay on a quarterly or even
annual basis. It’s much nicer to receive payments
regularly. Clickbank will pay you weekly, bi-weekly or
monthly. This is the kind of flexibility you want.

Trust me, this information will give you a head start
as you review which products you want to promote.
