I like to ask newly self-employed (or soon to be self-employed) folks what they plan to do once they start making good money.

A wish list of sorts.

Having one or a few things to look forward to can be motivating.

For example, my wish list includes

• A plot of land so I can grow my own produce
• A brand new car to replace my ’93 Saturn
• A 2-month vacation in London

Of those 3, the one that’s soon to happen is car replacement. Given how old my car is…I guess that’s priority.

So how about you?

Have you considered putting together a list of 3-5 things you’d like to buy or accomplish with your new found income?

If these are things you REALLY want…it will put a fire in your belly whenever you think about them. At least that’s true for me.

One of the best non-fiction books I’ve read in the past 5 years is Free Agent Nation.

The author, Daniel Pink, is an astute observer of economic trends as they pertain to the work world.

The book was published about a decade ago-and predicted that more and more people would be moving into self employment.

He was right. And the trend continues on.

He paints a very optimistic picture. If you want to feel supported in your decision to be self-employed…read his book.

One of the most affirming things I took away from this book is that I’m not the only person fed up with nasty office politics, tedious commutes, and feeling too tired after work to pursue my own interests.

More and more people are walking in that direction.

So it’s no coincidence then so many work-at-home sites have sprung up.

One of the most important points Pink makes-is that free agents need a solid network-a way to create continual income.

After all, when you work for yourself-there’s no longer the security blanket that comes with an employer and guaranteed salary.
